“How much does a website cost?”

Streeter Seidell, ComedianIf I had a dollar for every time I’ve been asked that question I’d be paying someone else to write this article from my beachfront vacation home.

The cost of a new website perplexes many small business owners contemplating doing business online. Cost is possibly one of the most frequently asked question by potential clients but rarely easily answered by most web developers. As a seasoned IT Professional I know it’s easy for web developers, designers and consulting firms to overlook the needs of the small business owner. Or worse, I’ve seen entrepreneurs dive head first into bad, long-term contracts that end up costing them way more than expected. Because every website varies it is impossible to give flat pricing. However, I’ll try to shed some light on this question in the next series of articles so you’re better prepared.

I’ll cover some basic questions about website creation and outline cost effective options on creating a good starter website. To better understand cost, you  must first understand what makes up a website. As I discuss each website component, I’ll cover guidelines on pricing for each. Lastly, I’ll add up all the various costs on monthly and annual time frames and from there you will  know how much a website costs.

Hopefully the following series of articles can help you to prepare yourself and your business as you plunge into the not-as-scary-as-it-sounds online world.

Stick around. We’ll cover:

  • Domain name registration
  • Website hosting
  • Website creation
  • Website maintenance
  • One-time, monthly and annual costs

If you have any specific questions, leave them in the comments below and I’ll try and answer them.
